Mugging at 18th and Summit

Six friends and I were recently mugged at gunpoint at the corner of 18th and Sumitt on Friday, November 23rd at 10:15pm.

The six of us were walking from my apartment up Summit to go out in Adams Morgan. We were attacked by four black teens (3 male and one female) with two guns. They demanded we hand over our stuff and proceeded to snatch our purses. My two male friends were not approached as they focused only on grabbing the women's purses.

Midway through the mugging a homeowner on Summit came out screaming. She held up the phone to show she was calling the cops and the group ran away to a waiting parked car. The car then sped off toward the Zoo.

In talking to neighbors it seems a similar mugging took place on the same corner (18th and Summit) about 5-7 days ago. That attack was done at knifepoint and involved four male victims.

Please remind people to begin taking cabs from door to door. Even in large groups (we thought we were safe in a group of six) you can be attacked.

Most importantly, we need to be asking Jim Graham (Ward One Councilmember) and Mayor Fenty what they plan to do about the recent increase in violent muggings in the Adams Morgan/Mt. Pleasant area. I will not be content until I hear a valid, strong reponse from either office outlining an immediate solution to this problem.
